What is it with Phillies pitchers and their boldface women?

Lefthander Cole Hamels is married to Survivor alumna Heidi Strobel.

Righthander Kris Benson, now rehabbing with the triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, is married to model-slash-spitfire Anna Benson.

Latest curve: Righthander Kyle Kendrick is pitching woo to Survivor alum Stephenie LaGrossa, who is back out there after a short marriage.

Kendrick, who turns 24 later this month, met LaGrossa, 29, when he visited Gigi’s in Old City with teammate Shane Victorino. LaGrossa, her brother Philipp and partner Sean Glynn bought the restaurant-lounge earlier this year. Stephenie LaGrossa also sells ads for WRDW (96.5).

Gigi’s has become quite the athletic hangout, as frequent pro guests include Eagles A.J. Feeley and Todd Herremans and Flyer Jeff Carter.

The iPod is hands down the most popular DAP on the planet. Now that everyone has an iPod, some people have started to look for ways to make their own stand out from the crowd. Not so long ago Fox introduced some interesting, custom engraved iPods with different characters from The Simpsons.

CBS wasn’t content to let Fox take all of the custom iPod action so it has announced a slew of limited edition, custom engraved iPods with images from some of its programs. Hard-core TV geeks can get iPod shuffle, nano, classic, and iPod touch players engraved with licensed artwork from CBS shows. Artwork is available from CSI, CSI Miami, CSI NY, Beverly Hills 90210, Survivor, The Amazing Race, and various sports themes. The iPods are not cheap with prices ranging from $89 for a 1GB shuffle to $499 for a 16GB touch. I will say that the CBS iPods are nowhere near as cool as the Fox ones. The 90210 iPod has to be the strangest. Who would want a DAP with a show engraved on it that sucked before the iPod was even invented?

Woo Does Survivor Poker Pro Jean Robert Bellande | Gambling911.com by Jenny Woo

Jean Robert Bellande

Jean Robert Bellande

I did an interview with poker pro Jean Robert Bellande a couple of days ago and I would have never realized how laid back this guy was unlike some of the Team Bodog members - ahem - cough - David - cough - Williams.

Jenny first became familiar with Jean Robert when he was a contestant on Survivor China and later found out of his professional poker career after the show made it be known as that being his occupation. I do have to say that we did have to reschedule our interview a couple of times because (surprise surprise) he was playing poker, but it was definitely worth it. Jenny: You¹ve been a nightclub owner and promoter with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Marketing. How old were you when you started playing casually and then professionally?

Jean Robert: I started playing around 27 years old.

Jenny: And how old are you now, if you don¹t mind me asking?

Jean Robert: 37

Jenny: Did you start playing casually or professionally at 27?

Jean Robert: Casually.

Jenny: And how old were you when you turned pro?

Jean Robert: 30

Jenny: Don’t ask me to try to do the math here. You joined Team Bodog back in March. How has the experience been thus far? » Read the rest of this entry…

The Associated Press: ‘Survivor’ producer countersues longtime partner

July 31st, 2008
The Associated Press: ‘Survivor’ producer countersues longtime partner

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The producer of hit reality series “Survivor” and “The Apprentice” has countersued his longtime business partner.

Mark Burnett filed the lawsuit against Conrad Riggs on Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. In the lawsuit, Burnett claims that he paid Riggs their agreed-upon 10 percent of net earnings on television projects.

But the lawsuit says $25 million in payments wasn’t enough for Riggs. Riggs is trying to get paid “on projects for which his services were never requested and on which he rendered none,” Burnett’s lawsuit contends.

Riggs also has tried to get networks to pay him fees directly rather than to Mark Burnett Productions, according to Burnett’s lawsuit.

Burnett is seeking unspecified damages and a ruling that Riggs has no right to any further payments.

The two met in the 1990s when Burnett was trying to pitch the “Survivor” concept and Riggs worked for Walt Disney Co. Together, the men were behind more than a dozen TV projects.

Riggs sued Burnett on July 7, claiming he is owed more than $70 million for his contributions to their joint efforts.

According to the Riggs’ lawsuit, Burnett stopped paying his partner in February 2007 after Riggs refused to sign a three-page contract to formalize their long-standing verbal agreement. Riggs contends the terms in the contract differed from their “agreements and practices.”

Burnett evicted Riggs from their offices this year.

ABC News: Keepin’ It Real: Reality TV Boot Camp

ABC News: Keepin’ It Real: Reality TV Boot Camp By GIGI STONE and MELIA PATRIA

Reality TV Shows

Reality TV Shows

In a large studio space in midtown Manhattan, men and women of all ages actually line up to be individually insulted. In front of a raucous crowd, they are booed and told they are terrible, awful people.

It’s one of the key exercises at the New York Reality TV School, and the point is to build emotional endurance to criticism and rejection. The students engage in a variety of wacky drills like this because they all desperately long for a few precious seconds on reality TV.

When — and if — they get that chance on “American Idol,” “The Bachelorette” or “Flavor of Love,” they want to be prepared.

Watch the story tonight on “Nightline” at 11:35 p.m. ET

“Reality television is that dirty addiction that we all get stuck to,” explained 24-year-old Reality TV student Christina Powis. “It’s booming. I would love to get into it.”

Learn How to Become a “Star” at Reality TV School

July 28th, 2008

Learn How to Become a “Star” at Reality TV School By KIMBERLY POTTS

Do you dream of designing frocks on Project Runway? Finding romance on Flavor of Love? Or bunking in the Big Brother house? Now there’s a school to learn how to land a gig on reality TV. At the New York Reality TV School, which just wrapped its second session, students learn how to audition, create an on-air persona and parlay 15 minutes of fame into a career.

The school, which claims to be the only educational institution of its ilk, is the brainchild of actor/coach Robert Galinsky. “It doesn’t matter if you’re going on vacation or on a job interview, you go prepared. Same with reality TV,” Galinsky says. “If you want to get on one of those shows, you should be as prepared as possible.”

To that end, 29 students ponied up $139 for a three-hour class, where they were critiqued on practice auditions for actual upcoming reality shows like You Owe Me Money, Pimp My Halfway House and Bully’s Revenge. They endured “emotional conditioning,” which involves being alternately insulted and cheered on by the rest of the class, and mingled during a networking session with refreshments prepared by reality alum Dave Martin (Top Chef). Jessica Krant, a doctor who holds degrees from Harvard and Columbia, was one of the school’s recent grads. “I wanted to hone my TV skills,” she says. “I’ve been told I should be a TV dermatologist.”

SO WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET ON A REALITY SERIES?

Get Real, Reality-Show Professor Says, Just Get Real — Courant.com

Robert Galinsky

Robert Galinsky

If you have aspirations of being in a reality round of TV shows like “Survivor,” “Amazing Race” or “Big Brother,” you may want to turn to former Wethersfield resident Robert Galinsky.

The 1983 Wethersfield High School grad turned actor, casting director, producer and entrepreneur has jumped on the reality-show bandwagon by opening the New York Reality TV School (newyorkrealitytvschool.com), a Big Apple program offering a $139 three-hour course on how to get on and stay on a reality show.

Galinsky, who lives in New York City, says his coaching classes bring out the best in people, making them camera-ready for the television genre that is here to stay. As a loyal Connecticut guy, he offered to share some of his reality-star secrets with his fellow Nutmeggers by “spilling the beans” with Java.

Q: I’m not sure I get this. You teach people how to be “real”?

Surviving Gabon - Anouk’s Africa Travel Blog

Surviving Gabon

By Anouk Zijlma, About.com Guide to Africa Travel since 2005

The popular US TV Show Survivor is being filmed right now in the Central African country of Gabon. Apparently the host Jeff Probst had to look at the map to figure out where it was. Given the fact that he’s quite a well-traveled individual, I thought it would be timely to provide some information about Gabon and what the Survivor cast and crew can expect to find there.
Gabon has only just started to develop its tourist potential. Previously it was too busy logging, mining and drilling its natural resources. Since 2002, Gabon’s President Bongo decided it might be a good idea to protect 10% of his country by establishing National Parks and Reserves with the idea of building up Gabon’s tourism infrastructure. Gabon now markets itself as “Africa’s Eden” and it is indeed a beautiful place. Wildlife abounds in this steamy tropical country. Thousands of lowland gorillas, unused to ever seeing humans, live in the rain forests along with chimpanzees, mandrills, buffalo, elephant and leopard. Whales and dolphins frolic in the Atlantic ocean while hippos surf the waves closer to shore.

All these animals are wonderful for Eco-tourists visiting the country, but the Survivors may find them a tad dangerous. Couple the wildlife of Gabon with the insects and bugs that carry all kinds of tropical diseases, and you’ve got yourself a real adventure

The US reality TV show Survivor will take place in Gabon for its 2008 Season. Where on earth is Gabon? Where will the Survivors be during their stay? Find out all about Africa’s “Garden of Eden” and how you can more than survive a visit there.

Where is Gabon?

Gabon is a small west African country situated on the Atlantic Coast in the central part of the continent on the equator. Gabon’s neighbors include the Republic of Congo and Equatorial Guinea.

Where in Gabon Will Survivor Take Place?

In 2002, Gabon’s President Bongo (yes, that’s his actual name) declared he would set aside 10% of his country as nature preserves and national parks. To this day several national parks have indeed been set up to protect the vast natural rain forests from further logging as they are home to unique wildlife including lowland gorillas, forest elephants, chimpanzees, and hippos.

Survivor Gabon is being filmed in The Wonga-Wongue Presidential Reserve which is home to elephants, chimpanzees, buffalo, lowland gorillas and antelopes. An adjacent park along the Atlantic shore, the Pongara National Park, has some beautiful beaches where thousands of turtles nest every year and you can also see whales as well as hippos. An educated guess about the exact location of the Survivor set can be seen here.

The Survivor crew has apparently set up base camp at Nyonie Camp, just near the Wonga-Wongue Reserve.

What Dangers will Survivors Face in Gabon?

The last time Survivor took place in Africa, the crew and cast were in Kenya where they enjoyed armed guards day and night. Gabon is a little different.

The Wildlife
The most dangerous element for Survivors in Gabon is probably the wildlife including numerous bugs, spiders and poisonous snakes. Gabon does not have a very established tourist economy and the wildlife is unused to humans. This is a real advantage for those interested in wildlife, but it’s also dangerous because the animal populations are an unknown entity. If you’re anywhere near buffalo or hippo you really have to know what you’re doing because they are extremely dangerous animals. Hippos kill more humans than any other animal in Africa (besides the mosquito of course).

The gorilla populations in Gabon are not habituated to humans at all yet. So they might be too shy to ever be seen, or not fearing humans, they could get much too close for comfort. The area of Gabon that Survivor is being filmed in, is famous for its Langoue Bai. Langoue Bai is a forest clearing, basically a beautiful natural grassy amphitheater in the middle of dense forest; ideal for animal watching. It’s likely that some of the Survivor Gabon season will be filmed in these clearings.

Diseases
Diseases are plentiful in Gabon. After all, it’s a tropical country in the middle of Africa, so trying to stay healthy will be a challenge for the Survivor cast and crew. You may be familiar with the Nobel Peace Prize winning Austrian Doctor, Albert Schweitzer. Dr Schweitzer set up his famous hospital in Gabon during the first World War (1913) and was known for treating the local people as human beings at a time when that wasn’t a given. His hospital is still going strong and is considered to be a leader in the treatment of highly prevalent infectious diseases and how they affect the body and mind.

Survivors will be trying to avoid malaria, sleeping sickness, filaria, leprosy, tropical sores, insect bites which could lead to onchocerciasis (transmitted by bloodsucking black flies, which infect the victim with parasitic filarial worms). And did I mention that Gabon also had several cases of Ebola seven years ago?

Putting The Survivors Experience in Perspective

Gabon is one of the most affluent countries in sub-Saharan Africa thanks to healthy oil, logging and uranium revenues. This doesn’t mean everyone is living in a brick house, there’s still poverty. But it does mean that if something happens on the Survivor set, help is not too far off. Gabon’s medical infrastructure is considered one of the best in the region.

Gabon is also a politically stable country. President Bongo has been at the helm for 40 years now and the country has been a little oasis of peace compared to other countries in the Central African region. When a country attracts many migrant workers from its neighbors, you know it’s doing well. Recent travelers to Gabon noted that –
“Mauritanians man most of the small supermarkets, Cameroonians have the bar and bakery businesses wrapped up, Senegalese run the restaurants and Malians tend the market stalls while the enterprising Togolese have opened up small hotels.”

Libreville, the capital of Gabon, is a modern African city with plenty of 5 star hotels, decent French wine, malls and fast-food restaurants. Once the Survivors get kicked off, they’ll no doubt enjoy a little R and R in a nice hotel on the beach in Libreville enjoying a cold Regab (local brewed beer). If they speak a little French they’ll be reading the daily pro-government newspaper L’Union. They can also enjoy listening to some Central African beats on Gabon’s best radio station — Africa No 1.

Want to Visit Gabon?

Gabon is a really wonderful destination and once you see some of the scenery on Survivor — go ahead, plan a trip! The best way to get there is either via France on Air France, Gabon Airlines, or for a cheaper rate, try Royal Air Moroc via Casablanca. Airfare from New York to Libreville will set you back about $2000. Once in Gabon, you should budget at least $50-$100 per day; it’s not a cheap destination, but it is unique.
